Impact of Kosi Mahasetu on Northeast Transport System and Economy

Abstract

The Shok of Bihar and the 'Kosi Mahasetu' developed on the Kosi river of India have a favorable impact on the transportation system and economy of Northeast Bihar. The bridge over the Kosi river was broken in the 1934 earthquake. Mithilanchal of Northeast Bihar was divided into two parts. To reach Nirmali, the western part of Madhubani, Darbhanga and Supaul from Madhepura, Saharsa and Supaul, a distance of 245 km had to be traveled. Its adverse effect was on the transport system and economy here. Keeping in mind the solution of this problem and balanced development of the region, the foundation stone of this Mahasetu was in 2003 and inaugurated on 05.02.2012. At present, it is affecting the transport system and economy of its affected area in a favorable manner.
