Abstract

Etymologically, the word 'Garhasthya' is considered to be pregnant from the words 'Griha' and 'Grihastha'. In the ancient Grihyasutras, Smritis, Koshadi, detailed and comprehensive explanations of the above word are visible. The word 'home' is commonly used in euphemisms. Its etymology has been specified in the Halayudhkosh by adding a suffix 'a' to the root 'griha'. According to the Koshopadishta explanation, 'Whoever receives the food items useful in living, is the same 'Griha'. In the fourth part of the Vachaspatyam kosha, an explanation of the etymology of the word 'griha' is found, where in the root 'graha', the explanation of the word 'griha' is specified with the suffix 'Karmani'. It is important to note that the word 'Griha' is not just a sign of residence but is also synonymous with 'Bharya'.
